Shopify or the Odoo store: which fits your business in Mexico

Pricing, payments, shipping, invoicing and inventory: when each one wins and when it makes sense to use them together.

In short

Shopify fits when your business is, above all, selling online to end consumers and you want a store that is quick to launch, with payments and apps ready to go. The Odoo store fits when the store is one more piece of your operation: inventory across several warehouses, customer-specific pricing, B2B sales and invoicing in the same system. If you already sell heavily on Shopify and your operation has grown, the third option is to connect it to Odoo.

Retail e-commerce in Mexico reached 941 billion pesos in 2025, up 19.2% from the previous year, according to estimates from the Asociación Mexicana de Venta Online (AMVO, Mexico's online sales association). With a market growing like that, the question is no longer whether to sell online, but from where, without your operation becoming a mess.

What is the difference between Shopify and the Odoo store?

Shopify is a platform built for selling online; Odoo is an ERP that also includes a store. That difference decides almost everything. In Shopify, the store is the center and everything else (invoicing, accounting, advanced warehouse) is added with apps or with another system. In Odoo, the store uses the same products, stock, customers and invoices as the rest of the company.

Odoo documents, for example, that the stock of each variant is updated in real time in its store and that, when a paid order is confirmed, the delivery order is created automatically in the warehouse. In Shopify this can also be achieved, but the warehouse, accounting and CFDI (Mexico's electronic invoice) live outside it, and you have to connect them.

How much does Shopify cost, and how much does the Odoo store cost in Mexico?

Shopify charges a monthly subscription in dollars plus a fee on each card sale. Odoo charges per system user and does not charge a per-sale fee (the payment gateway you choose does). These are the prices Shopify publishes for Mexico, accessed in November 2026; they may change.

Shopify planAnnual billingMonthly billingOnline card payments with Shopify PaymentsFee if you use another gateway
BasicUSD 14/monthUSD 19/month3.5% + $3.00 MXN2%
GrowUSD 39/monthUSD 52/month3.4% + $3.00 MXN1%
AdvancedUSD 299/monthUSD 399/month3.3% + $3.00 MXN0.6%
Plus—from USD 2,300/month3.1% + $3.00 MXN0.2%

For Odoo, the pricing page for Mexico indicates that you can use one free app with unlimited users on Odoo Online, and that if that app is eCommerce, its dependencies are included: Website and Invoicing. If you need more apps (inventory, purchasing, accounting), you move to the Standard plan (Mex$180 per user per month at the promotional price, Mex$228 regular) or Custom (Mex$330 promotional, Mex$410 regular), plus VAT, as of November 2026. Check the current price at odoo.com, because the page shows temporary first-year discounts. To understand what each edition includes, read Odoo Community vs Enterprise.

What it costs you: choosing based only on the monthly fee. In a store with high sales volume, the per-sale percentage weighs more than the subscription; in a company with many internal users, the per-user license weighs more.

When does Shopify fit?

When you sell mostly to end consumers, your catalog is manageable and the priority is to launch quickly with a well-designed store. Shopify comes with ready-made themes, a broad app store, Shop Pay and, in Mexico, Shopify Payments with cards, installments without interest (meses sin intereses) and OXXO cash payments.

  • Own brands that sell online (fashion, beauty, packaged food, accessories).
  • Small teams that do not want to run an ERP yet.
  • Businesses where digital marketing weighs more than logistics.

Its limit: electronic invoicing (CFDI), Mexican accounting and multi-warehouse inventory are not at the center of Shopify. They are solved with apps or by connecting it to an ERP, and each piece adds cost and a point that can fail.

When does the Odoo store fit?

When the store is one more channel of a company that already buys, stores, sells through other channels and invoices. It is the typical case of distributors, wholesalers and manufacturers that also sell online.

  • You sell B2B and B2C: Odoo lets you manage customer accounts according to your business model, and price lists.
  • You have inventory in several warehouses or branches and do not want to sync it between two systems.
  • You need the invoice to come from the same system: Odoo's Mexican localization stamps CFDI 4.0 and has a module that adds to the store the fields that invoicing in Mexico requires.
  • You want customers to pick up in store: Odoo includes "Click & Collect" and does not let customers choose a branch without stock.

Its limit: the ecosystem of themes and apps for stores is smaller than Shopify's, and a well-built Odoo store requires configuring the ERP behind it properly. If your operation is small and you only sell online, it may be more system than you need. If you are in distribution or manufacturing, it is usually the opposite.

How do payments work in each one in Mexico?

In Shopify, the most direct route is Shopify Payments; in Odoo, you choose a gateway from its list or bank transfer payment. According to the Shopify Help Center, Shopify Payments in Mexico accepts Visa, Mastercard, UnionPay, American Express (pesos only), Apple Pay, Google Pay, Shop Pay, installments without interest (credit cards in pesos only) and OXXO for 10 to 10,000 pesos. Two limits: it does not mention SPEI (Mexico's instant bank transfer system), and it cannot be used to take in-person payments with the point of sale.

If in Shopify you use another gateway (for example, to collect via SPEI), Shopify adds its third-party transaction fee (from 2% to 0.2% depending on the plan), on top of whatever that gateway charges.

The Odoo 20 documentation lists 21 integrated gateways, among them Mercado Pago (with a dashboard for Mexico), Stripe, PayPal and Adyen, plus manual bank transfer. Mexican gateways such as EcartPay do not appear on that list; they are connected through their API, with development work. We detail this in how to collect by card, SPEI and cash.

And shipping?

Both connect with Envia, the carrier aggregator. Odoo 20 includes an official connector with Envia.com that quotes rates based on the package and destination, generates the shipping label when the delivery is validated and leaves tracking in the customer portal. In Shopify, Envia publishes its app in the Shopify App Store. The details are in automatic shipping with Envia.

Can Shopify and Odoo be used together?

Yes, and for many companies it is the best way out: Shopify as the storefront and Odoo as the operations system. In Odoo's official app store there is a Shopify connector for version 20 (paid, published by Odoo IN Pvt Ltd) that brings orders into Odoo every 10 minutes, along with customers, returns and refunds; it creates an invoice and payment for paid orders, and sends stock to Shopify after each sync.

Watch out for one detail: according to its listing, products are brought from Shopify to Odoo only when you request it manually. You have to decide from the start which system is the master for products, prices and stock. This is what the complete flow of an order with no manual entry.

What mistakes are common when choosing?

  1. Comparing only the monthly fee. Add up per-sale fees, external gateway charges, payment apps and hours of manual data entry.
  2. Having two systems that "rule" over stock. If Shopify and the ERP can change inventory without a rule, you will sell what you do not have.
  3. Leaving invoicing for later. In Mexico your customer will ask you for a CFDI. Decide from the start where it comes from.
  4. Assuming everything applies in Mexico. Several features of Shopify and of payment gateways are only for some countries. Check before promising them.

Frequently asked questions

Is Shopify or Odoo cheaper?

It depends on how much you sell and how many people use the system. Shopify charges a subscription plus a percentage per sale; Odoo charges per user and the gateway charges its own fee. Do the math with your real sales and your real team.

Does Shopify issue CFDI invoices?

It is not a core Shopify feature. It is solved with invoicing apps or by connecting Shopify to an ERP with Mexican localization, such as Odoo.

Can I start with Shopify and move to Odoo later?

Yes. The most common approach is not to move the store, but to connect Shopify to Odoo when the operation grows, with a connector that brings in orders, customers and payments.

Does the Odoo store work for selling to wholesalers?

Yes. Odoo lets you manage customer accounts for B2B or B2C and price lists, with the same inventory and invoicing as the ERP.

Does Shopify Payments accept SPEI in Mexico?

The Shopify Help Center does not include it among the Shopify Payments methods in Mexico. To collect via SPEI you need another gateway, and Shopify adds its third-party transaction fee.
