Getting paid online in Mexico: card, SPEI and cash with EcartPay

Which method to offer each customer, what each one costs and how EcartPay connects to Shopify, WooCommerce and Odoo.

In short

In Mexico it makes sense to offer at least three ways to pay online: card, SPEI bank transfer and cash at a convenience store. EcartPay, a payment gateway based in Monterrey, accepts all three and publishes its fees: from 2.9% + $3.70 MXN + VAT for a domestic card and $10 MXN + VAT for SPEI, as of November 2026. It connects to Shopify and WooCommerce through its plugins; there is no published connector for Odoo, and it connects through its API.

What are the ways to get paid online in Mexico?

The main options are card, SPEI, cash with a reference, and mobile phone payments on Banco de México's infrastructure. Each one suits a different type of customer.

  • Credit or debit card. The fastest for the buyer. With a credit card you can offer installments without interest (meses sin intereses).
  • SPEI. According to Banxico (Mexico's central bank), it is its payments infrastructure that lets banks and other regulated entities send payments to each other so they can give their customers real-time electronic transfers. Each transfer has a receipt (CEP) with a digital seal that makes it possible to validate its authenticity.
  • Cash. The customer receives a reference and pays at a convenience store, such as OXXO. It serves those who do not have a card or do not want to use it online.
  • CoDi and DiMo. Two Banxico schemes that run on top of transfers. CoDi collects with a QR code, operates 24/7 and, according to Banxico, its transactions generate no additional fees. DiMo lets you receive transfers by giving only your cell phone number, linked to your account from your bank's app.

What is EcartPay, and what methods does it accept?

EcartPay is a Mexican payment processor (Ecart Pay, S.A.P.I. de C.V.) based in Monterrey. Its app in the Shopify store, published in February 2025, states that it accepts credit or debit card, cash, SPEI, CoDi and DiMo. On its site it also offers payment links, with a fixed or dynamic amount, to collect via WhatsApp or email without having a store.

At NIQERA we work with EcartPay as a partner. What follows is its published information; before signing, ask in writing for the rate that applies to you, the deposit times and the chargeback terms, because its site does not detail them.

How much does EcartPay charge per transaction?

For a domestic card, 2.90% + $3.70 MXN + VAT; for SPEI, a flat fee of $10 MXN + VAT. This is the table from its fees page, accessed in November 2026 (EcartPay may change it without notice):

MethodPublished fee
Domestic Visa and Mastercard2.90% + $3.70 + VAT
Domestic American Express3.50% + $3.70 + VAT
SPEI transfer$10.00 + VAT
Cash2.9% + $7.00 MXN + VAT
Cash at OXXO4.50% + $7.00 + VAT
International Visa and Mastercard3.50% + $3.50 + VAT
International American Express3.50% + $3.70 + VAT

An example with a $1,000 order: with a domestic card you would pay $32.70 plus VAT; with SPEI, $10 plus VAT. On high-ticket orders, SPEI comes out much cheaper; on low tickets, the difference shrinks. The page does not publish a fee for installments without interest; ask about it separately.

What it costs you: charging everything by card when a portion of your customers, especially businesses, would happily pay by SPEI.

EcartPay or Shopify Payments if I sell on Shopify?

It depends on whether you need SPEI. Shopify Payments in Mexico accepts cards, installments without interest and OXXO, but its Help Center does not mention SPEI. EcartPay does offer it in its checkout for Shopify. In exchange, when you use an external gateway, Shopify charges its third-party transaction fee.

Extra Shopify feeNo2% (Basic), 1% (Grow), 0.6% (Advanced), 0.2% (Plus)

Shopify's page does not clarify whether its rates include VAT; EcartPay publishes them as "+ VAT". Compare using your real payment mix and your plan. On a Basic plan, the extra 2% can eat up the difference on cards; on Advanced or Plus, it weighs little. If you are still deciding on a platform, read Shopify or the Odoo store.

Does EcartPay work with Shopify, WooCommerce or Odoo?

With Shopify and WooCommerce, yes, with published plugins; with Odoo, it connects through its API. This is what its integrations page says:

  • Shopify: two options. "Checkout Transparente", cards only; and "Checkout Ecart Pay", with cards, cash and SPEI.
  • WooCommerce, PrestaShop and VTEX: plugins with an install button; the page does not detail which methods each one includes.
  • Tiendanube: cards.
  • API: EcartPay offers a documented API to connect your store or your software.

Odoo does not appear on EcartPay's integrations list, and EcartPay is not among the 21 gateways that the Odoo 20 documentation integrates out of the box. Connecting them requires development on the API. If your store is on Odoo and you do not want development, Odoo comes with Mercado Pago, Stripe, PayPal and manual bank transfer.

Which payment method should you offer depending on your customer?

Business buying in volumeSPEIFlat fee and a verifiable CEP receipt
Customer without a card or wary of paying onlineCash with a referencePays at the corner store
Sale over WhatsApp or phonePayment linkYou do not need an online store

With cash you have to wait: the customer pays later and the order stays pending. In Shopify, for example, the OXXO code is valid for 5 days. Do not ship until you see the payment confirmed.

How are payments recorded in your ERP?

Each payment should be tied to its order and its invoice without anyone having to hunt for it by hand in the bank statement. With cards, confirmation usually arrives at the moment of payment. With SPEI and cash, confirmation arrives later, and that is where "paid" orders that nobody sees tend to show up.

An example of why it matters: Odoo's documentation states that if the customer pays by manual transfer, the store order is not confirmed on its own, and inventory is not reserved until someone records the payment and confirms the order. If you receive many transfers, it makes sense for the gateway to notify the ERP when the money arrives. This is how the complete flow of an order with no manual entryis built; if you want to automate that connection, look at automation or the Odoo implementation.

What mistakes are common when choosing a gateway?

  1. Looking only at the percentage. Add the flat fee, the VAT on the fee and, in Shopify, the external gateway charge.
  2. Not asking about deposits and chargebacks. When you get paid and what happens if a customer disputes a charge weigh as much as the fee.
  3. Offering a single method. The customer who has no card walks away.
  4. Shipping before confirming payment on cash or transfer orders.
