Odoo Community is the open-source edition with no license fee; Odoo Enterprise is the edition licensed per user. For a company in Mexico the deciding difference is fiscal: Odoo's full accounting and CFDI electronic invoicing (Mexico's electronic invoice) are in Enterprise. Community includes sales, inventory, purchasing and basic invoicing, but to stamp invoices you need third-party modules. If you invoice in Mexico and want full accounting inside the same system, Enterprise is the normal choice.
What is the difference between Odoo Community and Enterprise?
Community is open source (LGPL version 3 license) and anyone can download and install it. Enterprise uses an Odoo proprietary license and can only be used with a valid subscription for the right number of users. Odoo builds Enterprise on top of Community: it is the same core with more applications and services.
In practice, the question is not "free versus paid", but what you need the system to do for you and who will take care of what the edition does not include.
Can Odoo Community issue CFDI 4.0 in Mexico?
Not out of the box. The Mexican localization that Community includes is minimal: a chart of accounts and a basic tax catalog. The module that generates, stamps and sends the CFDI and payment complements (called EDI for Mexico) and the one for electronic accounting reports for Mexico appear in Odoo's documentation, but they are not in Community's public code. Odoo's official edition table confirms it: full accounting, which includes the localizations, is Enterprise only.
There is an alternative in Community: the Odoo Community Association (OCA), an independent community, publishes a CFDI module for Odoo 19 that connects to several PACs (authorized certification providers). Two honest caveats: the module itself is marked as beta, and as of November 1, 2026 its branch for Odoo 20 still has no modules. Whoever uses it depends on the pace of that community and on a provider who maintains it.
What it costs you to choose wrong: discovering after launch that you can't stamp invoices from the system, or that your invoicing depends on a module nobody maintains for you.
Which modules does each Odoo edition include?
According to the comparison table Odoo publishes, these are the differences that weigh most for a midsize company:
| Area | Community | Enterprise |
|---|---|---|
| Full accounting (bank reconciliation, analytics, budgets, localizations, reports) | No | Yes |
| Invoicing and payments | Yes (no CFDI out of the box) | Yes |
| Payroll | No | Yes |
| CRM, sales and point of sale | Yes | Yes |
| Inventory and purchasing | Yes | Yes |
| Barcode scanning for the warehouse | No | Yes |
| Manufacturing (MRP) | Yes, the basics | Yes, plus shop floor, scheduling, PLM and quality |
| Website and online store | Yes | Yes |
| Helpdesk, subscriptions, e-signature, documents | No | Yes |
| Studio (customize without coding) | No | Yes |
| AI in invoicing | No | Yes |
If you distribute or sell wholesale, look at two rows: barcodes and accounting. They are the ones that save the most manual work in a warehouse and at month-end close. We look at the case in detail in Odoo for distribution.
What does Enterprise include besides modules?
Services that in Community are on your own. The official table marks the following as Enterprise-exclusive:
- Unlimited functional support from Odoo.
- Version upgrades: Odoo converts your database to the new version at no extra cost for the standard parts. In Community, you or your provider handle the migration. We explain it in Odoo 20: what's new and whether you should migrate.
- Hosting in Odoo's cloud.
- Mobile app for Android and iOS.
This point is often missing from comparisons: with Community you don't pay a license, but you do pay someone to install the server, back it up, update it and keep it secure. If you go with your own server, see what it involves in cloud infrastructure.
When does Odoo Community make sense?
When what you need is in Community and you have someone to maintain it. Reasonable cases:
- Your main need is CRM, sales, inventory or a website, and invoicing and accounting are handled by another system or your accounting firm.
- You have your own technical team, or a trusted provider, for the server, backups and migrations.
- You accept depending on community modules for the fiscal side and you have a plan if a module stops being maintained.
When not: if you want to invoice, collect and close the month in the same system without depending on external pieces, or if nobody at your company can take charge of the server.
When does Odoo Enterprise make sense?
When you want a single system for operations and for the fiscal side. It is the natural choice if:
- You stamp CFDI 4.0 and payment complements from the ERP, with a compatible PAC. The Odoo 20 documentation mentions Solución Factible, Quadrum and SW Sapien.
- You need electronic accounting, bank reconciliation and reports for Mexico inside the same system.
- You use barcodes in the warehouse, payroll, helpdesk or Studio.
- You prefer that version upgrades and support come from the manufacturer.
The cost of licenses depends on the plan and the number of users. We break it down in how much it costs to implement Odoo in Mexico.
Can I start on Community and move to Enterprise later?
Yes. Odoo states that you can switch editions at any time, and its documentation describes the step: back up the database, install the Enterprise module and activate the subscription code. Two cautions: the version upgrade service does not include the edition change, and the third-party modules you used in Community (for example, a CFDI one) may clash with the Enterprise ones, so you need to plan what stays and what gets replaced.
What are the common mistakes when choosing an edition?
- Comparing only licenses: in Community the cost shifts to the server, maintenance and migrations.
- Assuming "invoicing" includes CFDI: in Community the invoicing app exists, but Mexican stamping is not included.
- Installing modules from any source without checking who maintains them or whether they exist for the next version.
- Deciding without mapping processes: first define what each area needs; then the edition almost chooses itself.
Frequently asked questions
Is Odoo Community free?
The license is: it is open source under LGPL version 3. What isn't free is installing, hosting, backing up and updating it.
Does Odoo Community stamp invoices in Mexico?
Not out of the box. There is a CFDI module from the OCA community for Odoo 19, marked as beta; as of November 1, 2026 there was no version for Odoo 20.
Does Odoo Enterprise include the SAT's electronic accounting?
Yes. The Mexican localization in Enterprise includes electronic accounting reports such as the chart of accounts, trial balance and DIOT (the monthly informative return on transactions with third parties).
Can I customize Odoo Community?
Yes, with programming. Studio, the tool for customizing without coding, is Enterprise only.
Is information lost when moving from Community to Enterprise?
It shouldn't be: it is the same database with additional modules. Even so, back up first and test on a copy, especially if you use third-party modules.
