Odoo 20, released in September 2026, ships with built-in artificial intelligence: agents that answer questions, create and update records, handle your website chat and help with accounting, documents, online store, website and help desk. You do not need to contract another tool, but you do need to buy credits: according to Odoo, all AI features consume credits purchased within the app. It is best to start with one specific process and give the agent only the skills it needs.
What artificial intelligence features does Odoo 20 include?
Odoo 20 spreads AI across almost all of its applications. The core is AI agents, assistants that understand requests in plain language ("how much did we sell this customer this quarter?") and, if allowed, carry out tasks. These are the features that serve a mid-sized company best, according to the official release notes:
| Area | What AI does in Odoo 20 | What it does for you |
|---|---|---|
| Any screen | You ask an agent for something from the command palette (Ctrl + K); you can dictate by voice and upload files | Find information or open a report without knowing where the menu is |
| Accounting | Answers questions about the company's finances using only the accounting data in your database | Lets management check figures without waiting for a hand-built report |
| Documents | Renames the files you upload with AI; you can ask questions about a file while previewing it | Organize invoices, contracts and receipts without typing names |
| Online store | Generates product images and changes name, price or description from the store page | Load your catalog faster |
| Website | An assistant creates pages, forms and menus, and suggests SEO improvements | Update the site without depending on a designer for every change |
| Help desk | Detects similar tickets and suggests replies to the team | Respond faster and with consistent judgment |
| Website chat | An agent answers visitors, qualifies the conversation and creates leads | Serve visitors after hours without losing leads |
| Marketing | Helps build automated campaigns and drafts social media posts | A first draft your team reviews |

What is an AI agent in Odoo and what can it do?
It is an assistant configured inside Odoo with three pieces: a system prompt that defines its purpose, sources of information it can consult (PDFs, links, documents or Knowledge articles) and skills (called "topics" in Odoo 19), which are the instructions and tools that let it act. The documentation says it plainly: an agent without skills can only provide information; it cannot complete tasks or modify the database.
In Odoo 20 agents gain reach. According to the release notes, they can now:
- Create records, even from a PDF, and update existing ones.
- Be called by automated and scheduled actions; you can then review those conversations to see how each case was resolved.
- Ask you for confirmation with buttons when they need permission, and also when they reach their limit of tool calls.
Two practical details. Conversations with agents are kept for up to 30 days after the last message. And there is an option to limit the agent to its sources: when you turn it on, it only uses the information you loaded and activated. For serving customers, it is the difference between answering with your policies or improvising.
What misconfiguring it costs you: an agent with too many skills can modify records nobody asked it to touch. OWASP calls this "excessive agency."
Can Odoo's AI serve the customers on your website?
Yes, in your site's live chat. According to the Odoo 20 documentation, an agent connected to a chat channel answers automatically, qualifies the conversation and generates leads in the CRM.
The valuable part is the handoff to a person: the documentation states that the agent does not guess or invent an answer when it lacks information, and that it escalates to a human operator when the case requires special pricing or contracts, account changes, when the customer asks to be contacted or when it cannot answer with high confidence.
The documentation for this channel does not mention WhatsApp. If your customers write to you there, the agent is a different project with different rules: we explain it in what an AI agent can and cannot do on WhatsAppservice.
How much does it cost to use Odoo's AI?
Odoo's AI is paid for with credits. The Odoo 20 release notes say that all AI features require credits, which are bought through the in-app purchase service (IAP). This is on top of your Odoo subscription. Before budgeting, keep in mind:
- The plan matters. According to the Odoo 20 documentation, installing the AI app on the Standard plan automatically triggers a switch to the Custom plan. Check with Odoo or your partner how much your subscription changes. We explain the differences between editions in Community vs Enterpriseservice.
- Where your Odoo is installed. The API keys documentation indicates that on Odoo Online you can use your own OpenAI (ChatGPT) or Google Gemini account, but it is not required. On Odoo.sh or your own server, API keys are required to use the AI, and the provider bills you separately according to the model and your account type.
- Consumption does not come in a table. Credits are bought in packs from the IAP catalog and each service has its own price. On the Odoo pages we reviewed we did not find how many credits each request uses; measure consumption in a pilot before opening the AI to the whole team.
Enterprise users with an active subscription receive free credits to try the IAP services. Prices and terms accessed in November 2026; they may change.
What does it mean that Odoo 20 connects through MCP?
That you can connect an external AI, such as Claude or ChatGPT, to your Odoo without a custom integration. MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets AI assistants use tools from other systems. According to the Odoo 20 documentation, Odoo's MCP server lets the external agent access data and use the tools the database exposes.
It is useful if your team already works with an AI assistant and wants to query sales or inventory from there. It is a security decision as much as a convenience one: you are opening your database to an external system. Before connecting it, decide which user and which permissions it comes in with, and review the list of tools Odoo exposes through MCP (the documentation publishes it on a separate page). On the AI provider companies use most for this, see what's new from Anthropic (Claude) in 2026service.
When should you use Odoo's AI and when not?
It makes sense when your data already lives in Odoo and is reasonably clean: the AI answers with what is in your database, so a duplicated catalog or badly entered customers produce bad answers. If your Odoo carries problems, start with Odoo rescueservice.
| Situation | Odoo AI? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want management to query sales or finances in plain language | Yes | It answers with the data already in your database, with no export to Excel |
| You get many repeated questions in the site chat | Yes, limited to sources | It answers with your policies and escalates what it does not know |
| You only need to move data from one system to another | No | An automated action without AI is cheaper and more predictable |
| Your customers mostly write to you on WhatsApp | Not enough | The documented AI chat is the website one; WhatsApp requires another integration |
| You want 100% automated credit or collections decisions | Not without supervision | Mexico's personal data law gives the right to object to automated decisions without human intervention |
The last row we explain in how to protect your customers' data when you use AIservice.
What are the most common mistakes when turning on AI in Odoo?
- Turning it on for everyone on day one. Without a pilot you do not know how many credits you spend.
- Giving the agent all the skills. If it should only query, do not let it create or modify. The documentation is explicit: skills define what the agent can do in the database.
- Outdated sources. If you change your returns policy and the agent keeps reading the old PDF, it will answer with the old policy. Odoo 20 lets you ask it to reprocess its sources.
- Not reviewing conversations. Odoo 20 lets you review how agents resolved automated tasks. Assign someone to read a sample every week.
How do you start with Odoo's AI without taking risks?
With a single process and a single metric. We explain the general method in how to implement AI without taking risks; applied to Odoo it looks like this:
- Pick one task: management queries, site chat or document classification.
- Create an agent for that task, with its sources and only the necessary skills.
- Test it with real cases, including the hard ones, before opening it to customers.
- Buy a small pack of credits and measure how much it consumes over two weeks.
- Name an owner who reviews the conversations and adjusts the agent.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to pay separately for Odoo's AI?
Yes. According to Odoo, all AI features consume credits bought within the app. In addition, on the Standard plan the AI app switches your subscription to the Custom plan.
What artificial intelligence does Odoo use under the hood?
Odoo's documentation mentions OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Google Gemini as providers. In Odoo 20 you choose a provider and Odoo selects the right model for each task.
Can Odoo's AI modify my records?
Only if the agent has skills that allow it. Without skills, it only provides information. The standard "Ask AI" agent cannot make changes to the database.
Does it work if I have Odoo installed on my own server?
Yes, but on Odoo.sh and on your own servers the documentation indicates you need your own OpenAI or Gemini API keys, at separate cost.
