Odoo 20: What's New and Whether You Should Migrate in 2027

What's new for Mexico, how long your version is supported and how to migrate without stopping operations.

In short

Odoo 20 was released in September 2026 and will have standard support until September 2029. For Mexico it brings concrete improvements in CFDI (Mexico's electronic invoice), electronic accounting and the receipt of supplier invoices from the SAT (Mexico's tax authority). If you are on Odoo 17 or earlier today, you have already lost standard support and should plan the migration. If you are on Odoo 18, your support ends in September 2027: 2027 is the year to migrate. If you are on Odoo 19, you can wait without hurry.

What is Odoo 20 and when was it released?

Odoo 20 is the major Odoo version released in September 2026, according to Odoo's official support table. It is available in all three hosting options: Odoo Online (Odoo's cloud), Odoo.sh (Odoo's platform for those with custom developments) and self-hosted.

Odoo releases one major version every year and, in between, intermediate versions that exist only on Odoo Online. Each major version has three years of standard support. That is why the question that matters is not "what does Odoo 20 bring", but "what happens to the version I use".

What does Odoo 20 bring for companies in Mexico?

The official release notes include a section for Mexico with changes that touch day-to-day accounting and invoicing. The most useful ones for a midsize company:

  • Supplier invoices from the SAT: you upload your e.firma (FIEL, the SAT electronic signature) and Odoo automatically downloads the supplier invoices you are missing.
  • Smarter XML reading: when you upload a supplier's XML, Odoo identifies what you bought, suggests the account and compares the amounts against what you have recorded to warn you if they don't match.
  • More flexible global invoice: it can be issued on a bimonthly basis and you can choose the month, which makes it easier to invoice sales from previous months.
  • Cancellation acknowledgment for cancelled CFDIs.
  • Financial statements under NIF: a balance sheet based on NIF B-6 and an income statement based on NIF B-3 (NIF are Mexico's financial reporting standards).
  • Supplementary trial balance in XML for electronic accounting.
  • Carta Porte (Mexico's freight waybill): the driver is chosen directly on the delivery order.
  • Payroll: the payslip email includes the link to the CFDI in XML.
  • Updated minimum wage, tax rates and UMA (Mexico's unit of measure and update).

Note: Mexican electronic invoicing lives in the Enterprise edition. We explain it in Odoo Community vs Enterprise.

What changes in accounting, inventory and sales?

There are deep changes, not just screen changes. These are the ones your team will notice most:

AreaWhat changes in Odoo 20What it does for you
InventoryOdoo suggests the minimum and maximum of replenishment rules based on your demand historyBuy with data, not out of habit
InventoryInventory aging reportSee which goods have been sitting for months
SalesSales dashboard above the list of quotations and ordersSee performance without building reports
Sales and purchasingSwitch between tax-included and tax-excluded prices on orders and invoicesQuote the way each customer asks
AccountingYou can ask the AI assistant about your finances, using only the accounting data in your databaseQuick answers without waiting for a report
BankingSyncfy as a bank synchronization provider for Latin AmericaLess manual entry of bank transactions
Daily useOffline mode: create, edit and delete records without internetWork in the warehouse or on the road with a poor signal

If your company distributes or sells wholesale, the replenishment suggestions and the aging report are the most valuable part of the release. We cover it in depth in inventory and warehouse in Odoo.

What does Odoo 20 bring in artificial intelligence?

Odoo 20 greatly expands its AI agents: they can create and update records, read files, be triggered from automated actions and connect to the database through MCP (a standard protocol for connecting AI assistants with systems). Two facts worth knowing before getting excited: all AI features now consume credits that are purchased separately, and conversations with the agents are stored for up to 30 days after the last message.

We detail what each feature does, and when it makes sense, in the AI that already comes built into Odoo 20.

How long is my Odoo version supported?

Each major version has three years of standard support, which is the only period in which Odoo delivers security updates. After that there is extended support at an additional cost, only on Odoo.sh (for some versions) and on self-hosted, where fixes are provided only if they are technically feasible.

VersionReleasedEnd of standard support
Odoo 20September 2026September 2029 (planned)
Odoo 19September 2025September 2028 (planned)
Odoo 18October 2024September 2027 (planned)
Odoo 17November 2023September 2026 (already ended)
Odoo 16October 2022September 2025 (already ended)

What it costs you: running the system that holds your invoicing, your customers and your inventory without security updates, and the migration getting bigger every year.

Should I migrate to Odoo 20 in 2027?

It depends on the version you are on. The rule of thumb:

  • Odoo 17 or earlier: yes, and soon. You no longer receive security updates. Also, Odoo only upgrades to versions that are still supported, so it makes no sense to migrate to a version that is about to expire: the logical target is Odoo 19 or 20.
  • Odoo 18: yes, during 2027. Your standard support ends in September 2027. Plan the migration calmly in the first half of the year, not in August.
  • Odoo 19: no hurry. You have support until 2028. Migrate when an Odoo 20 feature (for example, downloading invoices from the SAT) saves you real work.
  • Odoo Online: to a large extent Odoo decides for you. For major versions, the upgrade is mandatory every two years; for intermediate versions, a few weeks after the next one comes out. They notify you in advance and you can test a copy.

When not to rush: if you are in the middle of a fiscal close, if your team has only just learned the current version or if you have many undocumented custom developments. In that last case, first sort out what you have installed.

What can break when migrating to Odoo 20?

Standard Odoo converts on its own; what breaks is usually what was custom-built. Odoo 20 brings internal changes that force a review of customizations and habits:

  • Permissions: "record rules" disappear; now the filter for which records each person sees goes directly in the access permission. If you have custom-built permissions, they need to be reviewed.
  • Chart of accounts: account groups are replaced by parent accounts, and account codes become optional.
  • Fixed assets: asset models are replaced by depreciation models.
  • Payment statuses: "In Process" is now called "Paid", and "Paid" is now called "Reconciled". Your collections team needs to know before day one.
  • Returns: the return wizard is removed and the process is simplified.

Odoo's documentation is clear: if your database has custom modules, it cannot be upgraded until a version of those modules exists for the target version.

How do you migrate to Odoo 20 safely?

With a test copy before touching the real database. The process Odoo recommends:

  1. Request an upgraded test database. Odoo delivers it "neutralized": no scheduled actions, no real outgoing email and with payments and carriers in test mode.
  2. Update your custom modules to the new version, in parallel.
  3. Test your real workflows: sell, buy, invoice, collect, receive goods, close the month.
  4. Report and fix whatever fails, and repeat the test as many times as needed.
  5. Schedule the real migration for a quiet date: the database is not available while it is being upgraded.

The most common mistake is skipping step 3 or doing it only with the IT department. The people who invoice and who receive goods are the ones who spot what changed.

How much does it cost to migrate to Odoo 20?

With Odoo Enterprise, upgrading the standard parts is free, as is the support to fix differences in the upgraded database. What you built with Studio is also covered (if you stay on Studio with an active subscription), as are developments under an Odoo maintenance contract.

What Odoo does not cover, and where the real cost lies: cleaning up old data and configurations, updating custom or third-party modules (including those from partners) that have no maintenance contract, and training your team. On Community, the version upgrade service is not included. If your Odoo has developments inherited from another provider, start with an Odoo rescue to find out what you have before migrating.
